A counter stores the number of times a particular event has occurred. Brainboxes ED series includes a 32 bit counter in non-volatile memory, which is stored even when the device is switched off and restarted or reset.

Any ED digital input line can be used to count transition events. A transition event is when the ED input goes from low to high or vice versa.

ED low states are when the input voltage is below 1.0V, i.e in the range of 0.0V to 1.0V.
ED high states are when the input voltage is above 2.0V, i.e between 2.0V and 30V.

A rising edge is when the input goes from a low state to a high state.
A falling edge is when the input goes from a high state to a low state.
By default, every rising edge- low to high transition- on each and every ED input line is counted and the result is available to be read by the user.

ED devices with firmware versions 4.0 or later can be configured to be either 16 bit or 32 bit counters, earlier firmware only implement 16 bit counters.

To configure the counter mode and counter update direction (to counter either rising edge or falling edge) you need to go onto the ED webpage by typing in the IP address of your ED device into your browser.
Select protocol and on the protocol page you can select the counter mode and the counter update direction.
